Extraordinary People: The Million Dollar Mind Reader

The Million Dollar Mind ReaderDerek Ogilvie says he can read the minds of infants who are too young to communicate verbally.

Now he agrees to undergo a series of controlled experiments to test the limits of his alleged abilities.

He even faces the ultimate sceptic in the form of James Randi, an investigator of the paranormal who has offered $1million to anyone who can provide evidence of the supernatural.

Apparently. “I get little movies played to me, I really do, I’m not a liar, I really, really do,” pants the Scotsman, spherical head bobbing like a drowning apple as footage shows the “professional psychic” doing frantic jazz hands while an expressionless toddler batters his thighs with something plastic.

Here, Ogilvie subjects himself to James Randi’s “one million dollar psychic challenge”, which promises to separate the actually psychic wheat from the transparently cobblers chaff. Unmissable.

The Truth About Violence

The Truth About ViolenceMost people think of themselves as calm, peaceful, law-abiding creatures. But could anyone be driven to kill another person? To pull the trigger and end a life? The Truth About Violence discovers the terrifying violence that lies within everyone.

Violence is part of everyday life – from knife and gun crime to war. But surely ordinary people could never be capable of a heinous crime? Self-proclaimed calm and peaceful Michael Portillo is set to find out.

Portillo says he has never been in a fight and doesn’t have a single aggressive bone in his body. “I was brought up to try to resolve all conflict peacefully. I can’t associate with violence. I don’t understand how any human being can take violence to the extent of taking another persons life. I want to understand what makes people violent, what drives people to do it.”

The brain chemical serotonin plays a key part in people’s ability to control their aggression. Low levels can cause individuals to become violent, and it’s surprisingly easy for this to happen. Sleeplessness, for example, lowers a person’s levels of serotonin and impairs their brain’s ability to function properly, leading them to potentially commit sudden acts of violence.

Brain damage, from mild concussion routinely received in contact sports, is also a significant cause of aggression. But this isn’t a minor problem affecting elite athletes. Sixty per cent of wife batterers tested by Dr Golden, from Nova Southeastern University in Florida, had brain damage – damage that could have occurred at any time, without them even knowing it.

How To Sleep Better?

How To Sleep Better?Presented by Robert Winston, How to Sleep Better is a practical guide to the world of sleep. The programme explores the common problems, dangers and the mysteries that have puzzled scientists for years.

One in five motorway accidents are attributed to a lack of sleep, which was also a contributory factor in disasters such as Chernobyl and the Challenger shuttle explosion.

This programme looks at the dangers of poor sleep, how people perceive their sleep and provides real solutions.

Viewers can find out about practical tools to help them get a good night’s sleep rather than resorting to over the counter drugs. Most people have suffered the torment of a sleepless night at some point in their lives – for some it’s an ongoing misery. How to Sleep Better follows a group of self-professed poor sleepers as they take part in a ’sleep lab’ to pinpoint what is keeping them awake.

By pressing the red button as these tests happen on air, viewers can get their own sleep profile by taking part in an interactive questionnaire. The profile has tips on what areas to look at, and as the programme continues, provides advice tailored to your specific sleep profile.

Telepathy

TelepathyThe supposed ability of some individuals to mentally transmit and receive thoughts is examined in this hour.

Unsubstantiated claims are not proof, so several experiments are conducted to put the phenomenon to the test.

This includes exploring the telepathic connection that some twins claim to experience through a series of tests on one twin and recording the other twin’s reaction.

And a Ganzfeld test where a person in one room attempts to transmit mental pictures to another person in a different room.

Multiple Personalities

Multiple PersonalitiesIn early times, evil spirits were thought to possess people and make them act in strange and frightening ways. By the 1800’s, the study of this hysteria led some doctors to believe one person could have separately functioning personalities.

In this rare research film from the 1920’s, a woman has different personalities who believes they are separate people. One is a male that is not comfortable in women’s clothes. Another is a small child. The affliction has been known by different names, but recognized for centuries. Today it is called multiple personality disorder.

Why have they become tormented and broken into different personalities? What is the childhood pain that lies buried in the unknown depths of their mind? How can they search for the deadly memories that holds the secrets of their paths and the promise of their healing?

Psychiatry: An Industry of Death

Psychiatry: An Industry of DeathPsychiatry: An Industry of Death is a controversial documentary on the horrors of psychiatry, of punishing and persecuting of the innocent and promoting Fascism, racism and atheism.

It was the foundation for the Holocaust, apartheid, for Jim Crow and for Communism. It has lead to many deaths. It denies God, the giver of life and freedom. It stands against the values of freedom, life, liberty and dignity.

There have been allegations that this is a Scientology propaganda film. Although the church of Scientology has had influence on the production of this film, the evil inherant in psychiatry should be of great concern to all people of all faiths especially Christians and Jews.

Psychiatrists in Nazi Germany basically branded innocent people as mentally ill including Jews. The concentration camps of Auschwitz and elsewhere were nothing more than psychiatric hospitals for those the Nazi State deemed mentally unfit. IE: Jews Gypsies, Christians, Dissidents, ETC.

I, Psychopath

I, PsychopathPsychopaths… we usually only know them from Hollywood movies. We never expect them to enter our real life. But, the psychopath is closer than you think. Experts believe their number to be as high as one in a hundred. Most of them function incognito in high-powered professions…all the way to the very top.

But… it takes one to truly know one. In this intriguing documentary, Sam Vaknin, a self-proclaimed psychopath, goes in search of a diagnosis. In a scientific first, he allows himself to undergo testing to find out if he was born without a conscience. He knows he’s narcissistic and cannot empathize with others. By his own admission, he’s pompous, grandiose, repulsive and contradictory, ruthless and devoid of scruples, capricious and unfathomable… but he believes, he’s not a bad person. What he is is indifferent…he couldn’t care less. Unless, of course, the topic is himself.

Vaknin and his long-suffering but ever-loyal wife, Lidija, embark on a diagnostic road trip. But, it’s uncharted territory… deep into the mind and life of a psychopath. The 47-year-old convicted corporate criminal has agreed to take part in the pursuit of his own diagnosis… meeting the world’s experts in psychopathy in the hope that science will provide some answers for why he is like he is. These experts put Vaknin (and his wife) through a battery of rigorous psychological tests and neuro-scientific experiments.

Vaknin is shocked at the results. Sam, his wife, the scientists, the film-makers – will they ever be quite the same again?
