Heroin Nation

Cocaine Nation and Heroin Nation premiered on the Discovery channel are rated TV-14 because of the subject matter and some disturbing footage of drug abuse.

Both series take a raw look at all sides of drug abuse including the users, the dealers, treatment and even the science behind the addictions.

Cocaine Nation concentrates on the gritty underworld of cocaine use as seen through the eyes of law enforcement officers, addicts, users, therapists and scientists. The show makes connections between all aspects of cocaine, from how it is smuggled across the border of Mexico, to the way it affects teenagers in states up north.

Should I Smoke Dope?

Although it’s illegal, over 15 million people have tried cannabis. Even politicians admit to having smoked it in their youth.

But, in the press, there are more and more frightening stories about the effects of the drug, and there’s a growing debate about whether cannabis should be reclassified as a class B drug.

Dope Sick Love is a really remarkable documentary made for HBO about two pairs of heroin addicted lovers roaming the streets of NYC. There is no narration and we never see any interviews with the subjects, the camera just follows them around, like a third eye, completely detached.

Ecstasy Rising

ABC News television documentary with Peter Jennings on the history of MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine) also known as ecstasy.

It includes a short history of the drug and criticizes the negative health claims made by the U.S. government.

The rise of Ecstasy is a major event in drug history. If current trends continue, 1.8 million Americans will try Ecstasy for the first time in 2004.

Only marijuana will attract more new users. Overwhelming, positive word of mouth has made Ecstasy a nightmare for drug controllers.

Is Alcohol Worse Than Ecstasy?

Recent research has analysed the link between the harmful effects of drugs relative to their current classification by law with some startling conclusions. Perhaps most startling of all is that alcohol, solvents and tobacco (all unclassified drugs) are rated more dangerous than ecstasy, 4-MTA and LSD (all class A drugs). If the current ABC system is retained, alcohol would be rated a class A drug and tobacco class B.

The City Addicted to Crystal Meth

Central Valley, California, is home to some of the most impoverished rural towns in America, where crystal meth addiction is prolific. In Fresno, Louis finds a community ravaged by this cheap and highly addictive drug.

As he infiltrates the town, he experiences the reality of meth abuse, as addicts who are high (or ‘tweaking’, as it is known) invite him into their homes to see them take hit after hit of their favourite drug. Louis becomes surrounded by the madness of daily addiction and the meth-addled confusion which is breaking this community apart.

Drugs are therefore not only a risk for ourselves but also for others. But many drugs have not always been illegal, but were a medication against many “sicknesses”, like depressions or feeling tired.
